"Tonight we are travelers in the truest sense of the word, a slim notion of a final destination and no schedule to speak of. We are simply moving for motion's sake. Our plans were shared with our friends, but few understood. 'Going off to find yourself' was the standard interpretation. I don't think that is really our point. We are shaped by our experiences. Our perception of joy, fear, pain and beauty are sharpened or dulled by the way we rub against time. My senses have become dull and this trip is an effort to sharpen them" - Donald Miller / 'Through Painted Deserts'
Last year, I was feeling stuck in my routine at school and depression was a painful, numbing feeling that was having an impact on every part of my life. I decided I needed to change my environment so I went on an introspective, solo road trip through Oregon. Exploring and adventuring on my own, I had to step out of my comfort zone and create the experience for myself and as a result, this trip changed my life. The beauty and awe of being in the depth of nature gave me new energy and my time there gave me the self confidence I needed to turn my life around.
My friends at ARK Project Now shared this quote with me and I strongly connected with it because before my trip, my senses had become dull and time was getting the best of me. Going to Oregon sharpened my senses and it gave me everything I was searching for.
I learned that we can make the choice to not feel numb or dull. We can choose adventure for ourselves everyday. It doesn't have to be Oregon; it can be anything. Adventure can be walking to your local coffee shop instead of driving. It can be checking out a new part of town. It can be starting a conversation with a stranger or reconnecting with an old friend. Adventure is out there. May we always stay sharp.
